Winterising Your HomeWinterising is the act of insulating your home for the winter season. More than half of the energy used in households is spent on heating and cooling. With proper insulation, you can enjoy energy savings, comfortable living, and longer-lasting ventilation equipment. On the other extreme, a poorly insulated home becomes less cosy to live in and more costly to maintain. Heat moves directly from a warmer space to a cooler space. If there are rooms inside your home that are left unheated in winter, you would then need to make your system work double time to keep your interiors warm. To avoid this scenario, you have to insulate your dwelling, specifically the attic, exterior walls, floors, crawlspaces, ceilings, and garage. When installing home insulation, you may use any of the different insulation materials like fibre glass, mineral wool, cellulose, foam, and cotton. The type of insulation you get depends on the R-value, or resistance to heat flow, of the material you use. The higher the material's R-value, the greater is its insulating ability. Apart from using proper insulation materials, you should also use proper gears. The basic safety tools needed for home insulation work include work gloves, hat, goggles, utility knife, long-sleeved shirt, dust mask, staple gun, straight edge, broom handle, flashlight or work light. You should wear adequate clothing to protect yourself from irritation and injury. Before you begin work, read and understand labels and instructions. Never cover or hand-pack insulation around bare stove pipes, electrical fixtures, and other heat-producing equipment. Otherwise, heat could build up and cause fire hazards. Never cover attic vents with insulation to avoid overheating in summer and moisture build-up throughout the year. Have a professional inspect your home and do the insulation if you have doubts.
